Body Composition Analysis
Body Composition Analysis
Bioelectrical impedance is a non-invasive method that accurately analyzes body composition. During the measurement, a low-intensity alternating current passes through the body, creating an electrical circuit through which its conductivity is measured.
The conductivity of tissues depends on their water and electrolyte content. Tissues rich in water, such as muscle, exhibit high conductivity. In contrast, body fat, due to its low water content, exhibits reduced conductivity.
In our office we use the InBody 270, which through multi-frequency segmental bioelectrical impedance provides within one minute a complete and reliable picture of your body composition — muscle mass, body fat, total body water and other important indicators.
This analysis forms the basis for designing a targeted and effective nutrition plan, while also allowing us to monitor your progress accurately in each subsequent session.
Skinfold caliper
A skinfold caliper is a tool that measures the thickness of skinfolds — that is, skin and subcutaneous fat — to estimate body fat percentage.
What do we measure?
- Body fat percentage
- Fat distribution
- Progress in diet and exercise
Measurements are taken at specific points on the body, such as the abdomen, triceps, and thigh.
Who is it ideal for?
Skinfold measurement is ideal for exercisers and athletes who want to monitor their progress more specifically.
The process
We divide the skin fold into specific points and measure it with the instrument. The process is quick, painless and takes about 5–10 minutes.
Note: The skinfold caliper does not measure visceral fat.
Preparation Protocol
For maximum accuracy and repeatability of measurements, the following must be followed before each measurement:
- Abstain from food and fluid consumption for at least 3–4 hours before the measurement
- Abstain from alcohol consumption for 12 hours
- Abstaining from strenuous exercise or physical activity in the last 12 hours
- Avoid excessive caffeine consumption for 12 hours
- Removing metal objects (jewelry, watches, belts) that come into contact with the skin
- For women: avoid measuring shortly before or after menstruation
- Clothing should be light and as similar as possible each time the measurement is repeated.
Contraindications
The measurement cannot be done in case of pregnancy or the presence of a pacemaker.
Cases of Inaccurate Results
Inaccurate results may occur in the following cases:
- Metal inserts or blades: may cause interference in the path of the current
- Artificial limbs: may lead to incorrect assessment of body composition
- Fluid retention (renal failure, ascites, edema): excessive water intake may alter the results
